The City of Sedgwick seeks a maintenance worker in our public works department to fill a full-time vacancy. This individual will perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of roadways, public utilities, parks, cemeteries, and other public facilities; uses hand tools, power hand tools, and operates light equipment in the course of work; assists with routine maintenance, repair or construction tasks to support the functions of a division in a City department.
Though candidates without experience will be considered, an ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, have experience maintaining and repairing waterline infrastructure, and be comfortable operating various types of heavy machinery. Individuals with a Kansas Wastewater Operator II designation or a desire to acquire this certification are highly encouraged to apply.
Most importantly, a successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, take personal pride in their work product, possess a positive attitude and willingness to learn, and be accountable and dependable.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Below is a list of job duties and responsibilities you may be asked to perform.
- Water line maintenance and repair, tapping lines, installation of water meters, etc.
- Fire hydrant replacements
- Water sample collection
- Wastewater plant cleaning and maintenance
- Sewer line maintenance
- Lift station and pump maintenance
Roads and Rights-of-Ways
- Asphalt road patching and repair
- Storm gutter cleaning and maintenance
- Concrete removal, repair, and installation
- Street sign repairs
- Snow and ice removal
Parks & Facilities Maintenance
- Building repairs, improvements, and maintenance
- Pool complex maintenance, cleaning, and assorted duties
- Mowing and assorted landscaping duties
Other Skills and Tasks
Individuals will be expected to have the following skills, and or work to acquire them and become proficient:
- Basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC aptitude
- Perform gas and arc welding and cutting
- Class B driver's license with air brakes designation
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Graduate from an accredited high school or GED
A valid Kansas driver's license
Individuals will be exposed to extreme temperatures and engage in strenuous and prolonged physical exertion in order to complete duties. Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy loads, extensive walking and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required daily in this position. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds.
They will also be exposed to loud noises and flammable fuels and solvents.
Individuals will be assigned weekend checks of the water and sewer system and serve in an on-call capacity on a rotational basis.
