The ideal Police Sergeant will demonstrate the highest level of integrity and work effectively to continuously improve police operations and public safety. The candidate will be open and approachable, a clear communicator, and visible in the community. He/she will be skilled at utilizing best practices in community-oriented policing, crime prevention, field operations and investigations. The ideal candidate will successfully build professional relationships with his/her officers and civilian staff, fellow Spring Hill employees, elected officials, members of the public, and colleagues in the law enforcement community. He/she will have experience in areas of police operations, especially community policing, media relations, patrol, and investigations. He/she will have a working knowledge of records and property management. This is a non-exempt position regarding the provisions of the FLSA.

Essential Duties

  • Apply department orders, rules, and regulations to police situations; understands and applies legal standards.
  • Observes and evaluates the work of officers. Prepares evaluations identifying and documenting strengths and areas of improvement. Approves reports and prepares reports for court submissions.
  • Recommends, develops, and implements programs to address crime trends.
  • Maintains discipline and instills positive attitudes among officers. Provides guidance and reinforces positive behaviors, administers, and documents discipline.
  • Investigates complaints, use of force incidents and pursuit reviews; provides recommendations for or against discipline.
  • Performs general patrol duties.
  • May involve public information officer duties and managing police social media accounts.
  • Applies for search warrants, conducts follow up on criminal reports.
  • Ability to react quickly to danger and adapt to different people, behavior, and circumstances.
  • Report writing duties. Thoroughly completes offense, arrest, investigative, information, accident, evidence reports. Review and approve officer’s reports for quality and content.
  • The employee must workdays, and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required. Must be available for call outs, which may include response to crime scenes, shift coverage, and city-wide emergencies.

Experience: This position requires a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience in police operations, with some experience leading others. Experience with the Spring Hill Police Department is a plus.


Position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must be certified officers in the state of Kansas or be eligible for reciprocity within the first year. Position requires 40 hours of continuing education annually. With preferred education of a two-year technical or associates degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, or social sciences or continuing education in law enforcement or related field.

Normal work hours:

Hours are subject to shift work (24/7) and may require overnight, evening, day, and weekend coverage.
